Finally, iPhone 4 has launched in India though it took almost one year to land in Indian market after its launch last year and Apple has decided to sell their revolutionary device through telecom biggies like Airtel and Aircel. Obviously, it was still available in grey market or you could buy one on any online shopping mall but they charged 20 – 30 % more than its original price which was not at all a lucrative deal.

To get the device, one has to shell out Rs 34,500 ($765) for the 16 GB version and 32 GB version has been (over)priced at Rs 40,900 ($909). And that price is exclusive of ‘bumper’ to avoid “death grip”. At that price iPhone is definitely facing stiff competition from better spec’d smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S II which is roughly available for Rs 35000 ($778).

I was hoping that telecos will introduce it with some contract plan at a lower price but all my expectations were washed away when I came to know that it would hit our pockets with that price tag. Although, both, Airtel and Aircel have some “special plans” for iPhone users. They promise to recover 100 % cost of phone over a period of 2 years if you commit to pay a fixed price every month which doesn’t include usage charges. I don’t think its a grab-now kinda deal, rather just ignore them for a while and wait for prices to get a bit lower. Notably, it is available at $199 with a 2 year contract, then why not accept same strategy here ? Only Steve Jobs can answer this question and so we wish he was here.

Measuring 4.5 x 2.3 x 0.37 inches, 4 Apple’s fourth-generation model comes with 3.5 inch display with 640 X 960 pixel resolution. Apple iPhone 4 has a 5 megapixel camera, up from 3 megapixel in the earlier version. The camera has an LED flash. Users can now shoot a video at upto 30 FPS (frames per second) with the front camera.

While other mobile makers like Nokia waste no time to bring their brand new phones to India, Apple is undervaluing the mobile market here by bringing in their flagship phone at such a huge delay.
